THE FIRST step in developing a dressage horse’s hind legs are to make sure that their carrying power exceeds their pushing power. If the hind leg of the horse is to carry as much weight as the foreleg of the corresponding diagonal, it must be placed in the hoof print made by the foreleg (same side), which is just below the centre of gravity, at the exact moment that the other diagonal leaves the ground. The horse can only develop good paces, in balance, when the hind legs track up to the forelegs.
